Answer the Call. Make a Difference.

At Rheems Volunteer Fire Department, we are more than just a fire company; we are neighbors helping neighbors. Our team of dedicated men and women give their time, energy, and skills to protect nearly 10,000 residents across West Donegal and Mount Joy Townships.

The fire and EMS service is one of the most diverse and challenging vocations today. It is this diversity that attracts most men and women to join our ranks.

Different people volunteer for different reasons. Action-oriented individuals enjoy the excitement and adrenaline rush that emergency services have to offer. Some see the volunteer fire service as an alternative to “driving a desk by day” by allowing them to “drive a fire truck at night!” Many are motivated by the feeling they get when they help someone in their time of need. Others feel a strong obligation to serve the community, while some simply want to belong to a team.

Whatever your reason, everyone gains the self-satisfaction of being at their best when others are facing some of the hardest moments life can bring.

The Challenge and the Reward

Imagine preparing yourself to handle emergencies ranging from structure fires to childbirth, hazardous chemical spills to heart attacks, and almost anything in between. These skills may be called upon at any time of day or night, in any weather, and often under stressful and emotional circumstances.

These same challenges, however, are what make volunteering so personally rewarding. The personal rewards are beyond description: accomplishment when you control a fire, joy when a child is born, compassion for accident victims, and fulfillment from teaching fire safety.

While firefighting and EMS may not be for everyone, volunteering can be. We offer opportunities not just on the frontlines but also behind the scenes, such as administrative support, fundraising, and community event involvement—because every role strengthens our department.

Why Volunteer?

  • Gain valuable training and real-life skills.

  • Serve your community in times of need.

  • Build lifelong friendships and develop a sense of purpose.

  • Be part of a proud tradition of service dating back to 1920.

The bottom line of our mission is measured in lives saved, pain and suffering reduced, and property protected. Volunteering in emergency services is one of the most important, and rewarding, decisions you can make. We hope you’ll give it serious consideration and decide to join our ranks.
